Common Hiking Mistakes to Avoid

Today we want to talk to you about common mistakes that beginning backpackers often make. This is not specifically knocking the door of hiking for beginners, but, any professional just wasn’t born a professional. It means, Michael Jordan didn’t pop out of the womb, start taking his first steps while perfectly dribbling a basketball. It takes time to learn things, and that’s normal.

Difference between hiking and trekking

Hiking and trekking are considered the same and frequently used as interchangeable terms because of the similarity of nature. Both are outdoor activities and used to visit nature from outside of the home. But there is a noticeable difference between hiking and trekking. Hiking is something you planned to go for long distances for pleasure and exercise. On the other hand, trekking is far more difficult and based on multi-day tours. In trekking, you have to walk through rural, mountains, mud or sometimes deserts.

This blog post will help some tips of backpack hiking for beginners to learn from the mistakes of others. We are willing to play even a valuable junction with the help of some of the experienced backpackers. We took some input from our fellow backpackers and considered the mistakes.

Top Mistakes of hiking for beginners

Carrying unnecessary stuff

carry unnecessary stuff for hiking

As a beginner hiker, you might face common mistakes to research out the best gears for hiking. The top of the list is that you may carry unnecessary stuff while planning for hiking. Whether you are planning for day hiking, multiday hike or urban travel the number of hiking gears solely activity-dependent and you have to lug accordingly.

You know some might have luxury items with them in case of the urban hike. Some backpackers accept to carry ultralight stuff in a day hike. While others with multiday hiking activities need to pack even more stuff like an ax, changeable clothes, several boots, hatchet, warm outfit, a tent, and hydration packs, etc. But they are all things that you should have done professionally.

When you get in town and realize you need something else you can always get it from there. You can probably get and improvise without a certain piece of gear. Suppose you are on a hike in bush ranges of Sydney or desert of California and extremely need something then there are no ways to go back. You really guess yourself on every item ‘Do I absolutely need this? If the answer is yes then you can bring it with you.

If your backpack for hiking is extremely heavy, you’re going to be uncomfortable.  A heavy load for several days will break the muscles of your body may lead you to bad posture problem. We are really suggested if you’re new to backpacking check out some of the people who have thru-hikes gear lists.

Selection of inappropriate hiking shoes

overly planned trip

The second mistake that followed is in the selection of hiking shoes. What it means that shoes that don’t fit properly will not work well with your feet. You are going to be hurting with high tensile pressure on your feet. So you definitely don’t need to choose misfit hiking boots.

In this again you will have to face different conditions and confusion to pick the right one. You do have to find out what works for you well between several features like, ultra-light, ankle support, arch support, soft sole or waterproof, etc. The best thing that you can do is, try them out before you get out on a backpacking trip.

A sports shoe may not carry your feet for long trips and shoes best for trail running will not be fit for hiking purpose. You don’t want to tighten shoes and make sure that they are big enough to support your feet. If your shoes for hiking mismatch the anatomy, your feet are going to swell and create problems. So always pick hiking shoes for wide feet that allow you to move freely without any hustle.

When the toe of your feet is touching the front of your shoe while you’re walking downhill will hurt the thumb and fingers. It may lead you to a severely broken thumb and unbearable pain. Make sure to check the proficiency of your hiking shoe gear with thumb rule. Just press the front of your shoe while putting it on and it should have adequate abundant space to move your feet freely.

Overambitious mileage plans

over ambitious hiking

The body’s metabolic process starts when you supplied an adequate amount of oxygen. While performing high impact outdoor activities like hiking the process of burning fats and consumption of oxygen gain pace. It is a universal fact that a building will never be completed without the firm foundation. It takes some time to peach out body muscles to do specific tasks and you have to prepare it accordingly.

As a beginners hike when we listen to other guys traveling 16-20 miles a day we determine to travel the same distance in our early days. It is not obvious the right approach and when your body tired you must stop. It might hurt the bones, muscles and swallowed knees if you enforce to achieve extra.

Before planning make sure to prepare your body for backpacking first and then go for it. You just have to take it slowly and gradually to approach the desired task. Like other things, the mileage capacity is different for everyone because of anatomy. You will never experience the same output from everyone because the structure of muscles, posture, and other anatomy factors do allow you to perform activities respectively.

Excessive Food supplies

Food essentials for hiking

A healthy life needs to be balanced and it becomes more conscious while preparing for any high impact activity that requires full-body commitment. As a hiker you should take care not to take excessive foodstuff otherwise you will hang you out from your goals. An increase for foodstuff can cover the allocated space of other stuff and also hyper the load pressure of backpack on shoulders and feet.

This is the fourth mistake that a beginner really experiences the full-on hiker hunger. You’re in the first week of backpacking or anything like that ever really experiences the full-on hiker hunger. When you’re planning your first stretch just know that you might not be as hungry as you think. Keep in mind while you’re planning your first spring of food should not pack too much. Hiking experts suggested you should carry 2 lbs of food per day with you and not more than that.

Over planning the trip

overly planned trip

People who have started a hike and already have tickets for flight got the return date in their minds. You might estimate a certain mileage per day in your mind. Suppose if you are going on a section hike and it’s only for the weekend, you decided to get from point A to point B over that weekend. This will not allow them a free mindset to enjoy the trip. When decided that you’re going on the trip you know exactly;

  • Where you’re going to stay every night,
  • Where you’re going to eat your lunch,
  • Where you’re going to use the bathroom,
  • How much food you’re going to eat

Though planning is the key component of a successful journey. Backpacking is not a job and it does not mean to beat 9 to 5 job schedules. One of the greatest things about a backpacking trip is just allowing yourself the freedom to do what you want to do. Try to do the things in a flow and enjoy the side by side adventure. When you allow the freedom of not following the tight schedules, you will surely have some advantages.

When it comes to planning for food lot of folks, you know want to send themselves packages the whole way and already have their food with them. There is no precise rule to decide what food packages you should follow. Let me ask you, do you know what to eat for dinner three weeks and two nights from now? I am not sure about myself. Don’t limit yourself to a certain circle and let enjoy every moment of your adventure.

Wearing cotton clothes

wearing cotton clothes

One of the serious mistakes, when you are scheduling for the trail, is the use of cotton clothing, especially, the socks. If you are wearing cotton clothing you get it wet early and it loses all of its insulation value. A soaked wet fabric in the cold will get you to die from hypothermia.  For ultimate hiking always go for synthetic clothing or wool or a wool blend especially socks. This can be something like an athletic tee and wearing pants should also synthetic.

Conclusion

Those are probably the most common mistakes made by beginning backpackers for hiking. There is no hard and fast rule to deploy a specific strategy to tackle because of different conditions for different activities. Carrying unnecessary stuff, inappropriate hiking shoes, excessive food supplies, over planning the trip,  and cotton keels are some of the common errors of hiking for beginners. There is a certainty that you find plenty of other errors that can be made. I think the important thing to remember is the way you learn from others.
